I'm a reader and a writer and a better listener than most people may think, especially those who know me as a non-stop talker. Good conversation with people who really know what they are talking about is the best form of mental stimulation, catharsis and entertainment. I value the lost art of the living room and after dinner conversation that was sidetracked by the age of television where we were all transfixed by canned people, canned dialogue, canned music and canned laughter. The survival of civilization will be ultimately determined by our success in reviving dialogue, conversation and communication.
The degree to which we are civilized also is dependent upon music and what kind we listen to. At the risk of sounding woefully and hopelessly elitist, I believe that those who listen to classical music, most particularly Brahms, Schubert, Bach and Beethoven
...oh, never mind. They would be right, that is woefully and hopelessly elitist. But this does not necessarily mean that I do not believe it. .
